Things I learned:
-The white stuff all over the baby when she comes out, making her look like an alien, is actually this creamy water-resistant barrier so that the baby's skin is protected from the gross amniotic fluid (which is mostly pee that she...well, pees and then drinks right up!) while she's inside of you.
-It's better to tear than have an episiotomy (where they cut you in advance! OUCH. But I totally already knew this one..thanks Mom :)
-I told the teacher that people should bring their own "stuff" into the hospital, since they charge like $25 for each Tylenol they give you. It was funny bc she kinda agreed, but at the same time, she had to say that that is not allowed, and you'd have to "sneak" them in...
-Breastfeeding. All I can say is "good luck" to myself. Apparently, in the beginning you're supposed to do it about 10 times a DAY! And the milk will come in a "supply and demand" basis...so if you want a lot of milk, you have to breast feed a lot, is what she said. Well, since we didn't watch a "gross video" this time, we did have to endure a lot of "breast" pictures...
-There are all of these "holds" for breastfeeding. The cross your body hold, or whatever it's called, the football hold (that's the main one I remember, just because you don't really think of foodball when you're thinking about breastfeeding, right? Maybe guys would, and that's why girls do the job because they are less distracted by sports)

-The whole breastfeeding thing is scary. Painful. Time-consuming. But apparently, a "joy" all at the same time.
-I'm going to need to pump some milk in the beginning when I have tons, so that I can freeze it, and Jordan can do some middle-of-the-night feedings. (the teacher said this is for my sanity, and husband can pull some weight here) BUT, you're not supposed to introduce the bottle until 2-weeks later (and NOT later than that, or the baby won't take it) since the baby needs to get used to breastfeeding naturally, since it is a bit harder than taking a bottle.
-We toured the hospital. Not necessarily a 5-star resort or anything, but there were flat screens in the rooms, at least! Jordan is hoping for one with a jacuzzi so HE can use it. WHATever.
-Postpartum depression...well, let's just hope I'm good.
-They have "carseat patroll" at the hospital. If a mother wants to go home, and doesn't have a carseat in the car for the baby, she totally can't. That seems NORMAL, but it's funny bc they have people go down and check to make sure, inspect the seat, etc.
-You wear a diaper at the hospital...in the first 24 hours. Yeah. And some really pretty "granny panties" too. It's going to be good times!!

man. these classes make it sound so much worse than it really is! i've had all three of my babies naturally, without any medication, and it's not as bad as everyone says it is! i used hypnobirthing with my third, (only 5 weeks ago) which was amazing! the more calm you stay, the less it hurts. it's true. and i've never had any of my kids in a toilet! :) breastfeeding hurts but if you use black tea bags on them before you have the baby, it makes a WORLD of difference. if you are interested, email me tiffanydansie@gmail.com it saved my life the second and third baby. my first, it killed to breastfeed for 3 months. yeah. it sucked. pumping is fine... i pumped with my 2nd for 2 weeks before breastfeeding him exclusively and he was fine. they will tell you all sorts of stuff, but every mom and baby are so different. your first is always an experiment. don't be scared, learn with your husband, and have fun! it goes by so fast! this is tiffany beckstrand, by the way!
You are so funny!! You always give me a different way to look at it, but it's not really all that bad, you are just so excited for your little one and have more important things to worry about, and the time just flies, you're not there that long. With all the visitors coming to see you at your best, before you know it, you'll be going home. Our last baby, it was kind of nice, Kiana was with our parents, and we were alone. Like you said, not 5 star, but we just watched movies and hung out!!
Yah, I knew all that because all my friends who have babies TRAUMATIZE me about it! scary! I might just have a c-section and get it over with. and since you will be breast feeding, just feed my baby, how about that? :)
hugs hugs
Ha ha ha, I agree with other peoples comments, it's not as bad as they make it sound. You really are experimenting with your first. Just make sure you take time to enjoy it!!
ok that wasn't as scary. except that i'm TERRIFIED of breast-feeding. seriously. like more than i'm scared of actually delivering the baby. i have nightmares about it.
My tip for breast feeding, you need to buy and take with you to the hospital a BIG tube of Lanisol (sp?). And start applying the cream to your sore spots (where the baby is sucking) after every single feeding. It is by all of the breast stuff in the baby isles. Hopefully it will help with soreness. (and for myself the soreness of breast feeding was worse then the C-sections)
And try to avoid C-sections at all costs. They suck, although I can jump rope with out peeing, because I did not push 3 of my babies out and ruin my bladder. (Just trying to find the silver lining.)
Janessa, have to add my two cents here:) We gave all of our babies bottles w/ breastmilk earlier than 2 weeks and pretty sporadically, like if I NEEDED a shopping trip, and they all took it and did great. Also we introduce a pacifier within hours after birth and they have all taken them and been pretty good sleepers, i think they needed to suck to soothe themselves. They never had nipple confusion or whatever that is. Enjoy the diaper, it's great. Sometimes they'll put a huge frozen maxi pad in the diaper to help with swelling. Breastfeeding for me was painful for about 2 weeks. Lansinoh stained all my bras so I stopped using it, but if you're wearing a breast pad it won't matter. OH, have you're breast pump ready to go b/c when your milk comes in it is WOW something else. You'll want to get it out and sometimes the baby can't drink it all! I know this is probably way more than you asked for, but it's an irresistable topic! Fun shower pictures, I'm excited for you and Jordan!
You do not need to wear those diapers- take your own super pads and just change often, the nurse is not going to know!! Do not be afraid of the birth- that is my favorite part of the whole expierence!!
