My Two Cents--Prop 8

I just thought I'd share this...I am upset about what this world has come to. The legality of gay marriage isn't just about unions between same-sex couples, but it will change the way our children learn about marriage in schools, it will change the requirements for those performing marriage, and it will change the moral center of our society. It's just setting us up for a slippery downhill slope...

What is more sad is that a lot of members of our church still do not accept what the church's position is on this legislation. It is so strange to me, since I know that when the prophet speaks, the discussion is over--we don't make the rules, God makes the rules. We can't change what our Heavenly Father has mandated as His standard for us. Yes, it's hard to be an "outsider" in our world today and it's hard to take this position with many friends (yes, I too have these friends) who are gay. But, my testimony is that I can't make the rules, and His law trumps whatever I may think or feel. He knows all. He sees the whole picture. And we must obey.

From "The Family: A Proclamation to the World," we read that "The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan." and also "We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife." And we can't forget how this is a proclamation to the WORLD, not just to members of the church! This is a proclamation to all of God's children--including those in California.

Anyway, this article made me really sad, but really reinforces how "peculiar" a people we are in our society. From http://www.foxnews.com/:

Tom Hanks, an Executive Producer for HBO’s controversial polygamist series “Big Love,” made his feelings toward the Mormon Church’s involvement in California's Prop 8 (which prohibits gay marriage) very clear at the show’s premiere party on Wednesday night.

“The truth is . . . a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen.” “There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here's what happens now. A little bit of light can be shed, and people can see who's responsible, and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting Constitution, and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let's have faith in not only the American, but Californian, constitutional process.”

When informed of the "Forrest Gump" star's comments, Kim Farah, a spokesperson for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, said "Expressing an opinion in a free and democratic society is as American as it gets."

Bill McKeever, a rep for the Mormonism Research Ministry, added, "Personally, I find it un-American to tell people that they shouldn’t vote their conscience. Hanks said he doesn’t 'like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper.' Considering that just about every law discriminates in some form or another, makes this comment ridiculous. Hanks’ comment shows that he very much believes in discriminating against people with whom he disagrees. I may not agree with Mormon theology, but I certainly defend their right to express their opinion."

I love what Bill McKeever says. Perfect. Anyway, I may not make any friends with my two cents here, but I felt like I should say something.

**Update: Tom Hanks later apologized for his comments and said that "un-American" is a word not to be used lightly, and that Mormons are entitled to their opinion and to "vote their conscience."

Taylor Family Pictures

What a great time to do family pictures...NOT. So, I don't have the actual professional pictures yet, but I have a couple cute ones we took after--that Jordan's Mom took...

So in these shots, I only look like 3 months pregnant, hehe... It was great to have Ben and Camille around! Ben is Jordan's older brother that lives in Kona--Hawaii, and Camille is his younger sister who lives in Virginia.

Anyway, more to come when we get the shots!

Thoughts.

So, I've talked a lot about Claire's arrival in a play by play basis... but I haven't talked about what I've been feeling over the past week and a half. Having your first child, I think, brings about a wide range of emotions in a parent.

When Claire was born, Jordan and I both cried (along with the grandmas, of course :) --it's just a big release when your baby has finally come, and the miracle of the birth really sets in. Like I said before, Jordan's paternal instincts set in pretty quickly, and my maternal instincts have been progressively stronger... I haven't really been a "baby" person--someone who loves all babies, can't get enough of them, wants to work at a daycare, etc. But, it truly is different when the baby is your own.

So, I've been having these fairly depressing feelings, like how I can't imagine anyone wanting to harm any little baby...just thinking about during the time that Jesus was born, how Herod commanded his soldiers to kill all babies under two years of age. I can't imagine that--and wonder how many of those soldiers had a hard time carrying out those orders. Wondering also how God felt as those innocent babies were killed.

Also, as I nurse Claire, I think about the pioneers, starving and exhausted as they crossed the plains. As a mother, you think so much about making sure your child gets enough to eat and is able to grow at the right pace, etc... I can't imagine those pioneer mothers, that since they don't get enough to eat themselves, they can't produce enough milk for their babies. And the sad cries of the child...that is just unimaginable. It's no wonder so many babies didn't make it through that difficult trek.

That also leads me to think of all of the children of the world that die every day. It really gives you an eternal perspective because I can't imagine the Lord allowing that to happen if this life weren't simply a small portion of our eternal progression.

Sorry this post is really depressing...sadly, this is what I've been thinking about lately!! But on a lighter note, I really need to say...I don't want Claire to grow up. I want her to stay a sweet innocent baby forever! I don't want her to grow up and not need me anymore!
I also can understand better why so many parents are "helicopter parents," swooping down to help their child avoid any heartache or trials in life. I'm not planning on becoming a "helicopter parent," but I can understand that temptation. I look at Claire, and I never want any of her classmates to call her names, never want her to have to deal with peer pressure, have to make tough decisions, or handle heavy responsibilities. But, I know that she'll have to endure it all--endure life, just like the rest of us!

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Very crazy I know! I'm glad that she won't be a teenager anytime soon, so at least I've got that.

More about Claire: At Home

This was taken at the hospital still--a great shot with her eyes OPEN!

We are finally home :) It has been great (except that I need that reclining bed at home, let's be honest) and of course, tiring!

Claire is on the graveyard shift when it comes to her sleep schedule. Up all night, asleep all day. NOT for long. We've been waking her up every 3 hours to breastfeed so that she won't be as awake at night.

Jordan on burping duty

Breastfeeding is...well, I think I'd go through labor all over again instead!!! When she first latches on--omigosh, EXCRUCIATING pain. TOE CURLING pain. But it's worth it, I guess :) I just have to get toughened up! I heard from my sister-in-law, Ann-Marie, that it gets worse before it gets better, and I'm pretty sure I'm in the "worse" stage right now. BUT, now I can totally relate to how my Mom has described breast feeding. It really is so awesome and "bonding" and all of that...she is just too cute.

My mom has been here and has been helping a TON! She is great.

More about Claire: The Hospital

Well, in an effort to document my whole life (for all y'all to see) I need to talk about every experience with our darling new addition :)

Waiting... and from my expression, you can tell that I TOTALLY wanted Jordan to take LOTS of pictures of ME in the hospital...

But then I cooperated...

Induction:
Wednesday morning, I was scheduled for an induction at the hospital, but actually went into labor myself at about midnight, the morning of...which was good for them, painful for me! I'm a wimp! It was so painful--I had these really bad lower back pains (which I found out meant she was turned the wrong way...but we got that fixed later) and was just waiting to go to the hospital and get the drugs :) They called me at 5:30 in the morning and we went in at about 6:45am.

First they put me on antibiotics since I have that annoying Strep B thing, and then they gave me the oxytocin to start me--smaller doses at first, working up. That helped me be in a lot more pain. :)

And, as usual in hospitals, they starve you that day, so my lunch was ice chips with grape flavoring, and dinner was ice chips with cherry flavoring! It was great :)

Epidural:
Finally at 10:15 am, they gave me the drugs. Can I say, "hallelujah??" I am SO GLAD I live in these modern times...seriously. The doctor who gave me the epidural was AWESOME, and I could still feel the right amount of pressure to keep the labor progressing and push. He said I also have a "great back" for epidurals. Thought that was funny. Jordan especially thought it was funny when the anesthesiologist warned there would be a "slight jolt" I would feel. Slight wasn't exactly the correct term for me. With the "slight jolt," my whole body practically jumped out of bed and kicked Jordan in the head in the process!! It was like I was struck by lightning! So funny...

Then Jordan had so much fun laughing at my "loopy" attitude after receiving the epidural. It was all uphill from there!

Delivery: (reader discretion: not for the faint of heart)
And finally the time had come! It did not come soon enough--I have to say, having a baby...the day at the hospital, at least...can kinda DRAG. The anticipation is just too great!

So, Jordan and I weren't sure WHO would be present at the delivery. We went between just us, my mom & his mom, whoever wanted to... well, the third option wasn't really an option :) But in the end, it kinda WAS what happened! After flashing them so many times being adjusted and everything during the day, I figured, "what the heck." So, in the delivery room, Jordan's mom, my mom, my three sisters-in-law, a medical student (who helped with the birth), my nurse, Wendy, and handful of other hospital staff that was getting the "cleaning station" ready for when she came out.

I only pushed for like 20 minutes and then my doctor, Doctor Natalie Loewen (that's for posterity...) gave me an episiotomy because what happened was, Claire was under a lot of stress. Her heart rate was dropping from the pressure. It was interesting, Dr. Loewen was tickling her head as she came out, and Jordan noticed this was raising her heart rate each time she did it. Later, he talked to the doctor and she said that the reason she gave me the episiotomy (since I would have torn 10 minutes later) is because of the heart rate. But, it was cool because during the delivery, the doctor would just say "I'm just tickling her head..." so she wouldn't freak us out over the heart rate. Anyway, that was good. Once the episiotomy was "perfomed" she was out in like 3 pushes.

Unfortunately, since she was a week late, she had already had a bowel movement. So, it was pretty sad that right when she came out, they whisked her away to get cleaned quickly so that she wouldn't breathe in any of the maconium. So there I was, on the bed, getting stitched up, while everyone ELSE got to see the baby! But I was patient. And they finally brought her to me...

Meeting Claire for the first time

About 5 min. old

Getting weighed

Post-Delivery:

Man, they check your vitals a lot, and the baby's! I think my blood pressure was tested like 65 times a day. Glad they care though :) The hospital stay was nice--the nurses were great, and the whole reclining bed thing...I need that at MY house!

However, the FOOD was awful!!! It's sad because the food in the cafeteria is amazing, AND cheap, but then they feed the patients this $1.25 TV dinner crap. I'm not joking. I mean, I'm not that picky and I couldn't eat it! (I like AIRPLANE food--well, the stuff on International flights is pretty darn good!) So, if anyone delivers at this hospital, be prepared to have family and friends bring cafeteria food to you--it's SO much better...

First bath and "hair brushing" experience

Jordan had the WORST experience at the nursery though! They stuck poor little Claire like 5 times with needles because they had these unexperienced-with-babies flabotomists on duty. Finally the right guy came along, but that was after they left Claire under a heating lamp, undressed, with the lamp turned OFF, and she was SO hungry and sad and Jordan was getting really fed up--especially since there were nurses there just sitting around talking and not even caring!! Anyway, it was bad. Jordan gets in a bad mood just thinking about it...his paternal feelings have definitely kicked in!

Jordan and Claire in the hospital room

I have to say also, that in the hospital, Jordan was AWESOME. He stayed with me both nights (they have a couch to sleep on in the room--for that purpose) and changed ALL of her diapers!! He is a natural!

New Baby!

Well, Jordan and I are officially parents! Claire Michelle Taylor was born at 5:16 p.m. on January 7, 2009. She weighs 7 lbs., 2 oz., and measures 19.5 inches. She has such cute, petite features, and nice long eyelashes. She also has a great head of dark hair! (just like her mom :) More about the whole experience to come! But in the meantime, here are some pictures!

Happy New Year!

This year, we had the "Second Annual New Years Eve Party" at Natalie's house :) Natalie and Rob are our wonderful neighbors and such good hosts! She made a big pot of chili, I did twice-baked potatoes and mint brownies for dessert, and everyone brought sides. We had so much food... (leftovers!)

And we played the best game ever...."Catch Phrase" like a million times until midnight. It was SO FUN!!! And this year, Garrett didn't win the whole time! :) Yes!

Natalie & Rob Lund

Brittany & Garrett Best (Garrett doing his "Edward" pose)

The new move-in's, Britton & Aubrey Howell!

Gillis & Megan Sessions

Rachel & Jonathan DenBeste (Jonathan being a total dork in the photo, as usual :)

Jordan & Me

Another nice random shot

Some of the night's highlights:

* Janessa is losing her mind. Due to the sheer volume of items she was bringing to Natalie's house (walking there...she's just a few houses down the road) she decided to slip her cell phone into her...bosom :) TOTALLY forgot it was there, used Natalie's phone to call Jordan at one point, because she couldn't find it (although she heard a text message at one point, was looking around...it seemed so close by!! STILL didn't pick up on that) until during dinner when someone texted her again, and she looked down. Yes.

* Natalie calling the language "Afrikaans" "Africonics" haha... it was just really funny.

* Garrett pretending to be a HUGE fan of Twilight, and us gullible girls TOTALLY believing him...he was simply regurgitating what his wife had said (in the most convincing way!) about the books and the movie (yes, I also hated Bella's prom dress in the movie!)

* Janessa calling Ryan Seacrest's dumb earmuffs "ear mufflers..." yes, Jordan looked at her really weird.

* Rob STALLING during his turn in Catch Phrase so that Natalie would run out of time!!

* Natalie, Rachel, and Janessa talking about ovulation cycles and Rob accidentally getting stuck in the conversation :)

OK I can't remember any more...we just had so much fun, and that's all there is to it!! AND, I didn't have a baby!!! YES! That means cheaper delivery here I come! I think maybe this weekend....we'll see!
